Shaykh Muḥammad b. ʿAlī al-Ṣaduq
۞
9-13 Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. Isḥāq al-Ṭāliqānī, may God be pleased with him, narrated to us, he said: al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn al-Sukkarī narrated to us, he said: Muḥammad b. Zakariyyā al-Jawharī narrated to us; from Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmmārah; from his father; from Abū ʿAbd Allāh Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad al-Ṣādiq (ʿas), who said
"The Messenger of God (ṣ) married fifteen women, consummated his marriages with thirteen of them, and was survived by nine wives. As for the two with whom he did not consummate his marriage, they were ʿAmrah and al-Sanā. As for the thirteen with whom he did consummate his marriages, the first was Khadījah bt. Khuwaylid; then Sawdah bt. Zamʿah; then Umm Salamah, whose name was Hind bt. Abī Umayyah; then Umm ʿAbd Allāh, ʿĀʾishah bt. Abī Bakr; then Ḥafṣah bt. ʿUmar; then Zaynab bt. Khuzaymah b. al-Ḥārith, the mother of the poor; then Zaynab bt. Jaḥsh; then Umm Ḥabībah, who is Ramlah bt. Abī Sufyān; then Maymūnah bt. al-Ḥārith; then Zaynab bt. ʿUmays; then Juwayriyyah bt. al-Ḥārith; and finally Ṣafiyyah bt. Ḥuyayy b. Akhṭab. As for the one who gave herself to the Prophet (ṣ), it was Khawlah bt. Ḥakīm al-Sulamī. He, additionally, had two concubines he would alternate nights with, as he did with his wives: Māriyah and Rayḥānah of Khandaq. The nine wives who survived him were ʿĀʾishah; Ḥafṣah; Umm Salamah; Zaynab bt. Jaḥsh; Maymūnah bt. al-Ḥārith; Umm Ḥabībah bt. Abī Sufyān; Ṣafiyyah bt. Ḥuyayy b. Akhṭab; Juwayriyyah bt. al-Ḥārith; and Sawdah bt. Zamʿah. The best of them was Khadījah bt. Khuwaylid, and after her, Umm Salamah bt. al-Ḥārith."
Notes
Sunni Sīrah gives an alternative order of the Prophet's marriages, with the first three being Khadījah, ʿĀʾishah, and Sawdah. However, there is disagreement over whether ʿĀʾishah or Sawdah was second (Shaddel, Mehdy. Lists and Islamic Historical Memory: A List of Muhammad's Wives on Papyrus. Unpublished. pg. 11). He appears not to take this list into account in his assessment, as this Hadith is more unique in its ordering of wives than even the papyrus that Shaddel examined, which, in his assessment, lay outside the later Islamic historiographical tradition. Here, Sawdah is his second wife and Umm Salamah his third. ʿĀʾishah is, instead, relegated to the fourth marriage.
