hadith 230

Imam Sadiq (a.s) said: “When the following verse was revealed: “O' ye who believe! Save yourselves and your families from a Fire!” [The Holy Quran: Tahrim 66:6], a Muslim man sat down and started to cry. He said: “I am not even able to protect myself from the Fire, now I am ordered to protect my family from the Fire, too.” The Prophet of God (a.s) said

“It suffices for you to enjoin the right and forbid the wrong for them in the same way that you do it for yourself.”

وقال الصادق (عليه السلام) لما نزلت هذه الآية: ﴿يا أيها الذين آمنوا قوا أنفسكم وأهليكم نارا﴾: جلس رجل من المسلمين يبكي، وقال: أنا قد عجزت عن نفسي كلفت أهلي، فقال رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله): حسبك أن تأمرهم بما تأمر به نفسك وتنهاهم عما تنهى عنه نفسك!.

hadith 237

Imam Sadiq (a.s) said: “God the Almighty has left a believer's affairs up to himself, but has not abandoned him to be humiliated. Have you not heard God's words: “But honor belongs to God and His Apostle, and to the Believers.” [The Holy Quran: Munafiqun 63:8]; Therefore believers are honored, not abased.” He then added: “Believers are even nobler than the mountains since we can knock down the mountains and destroy them, but nothing can diminish a believer's faith.”

وعنه (عليه السلام) قال

إن الله فوض إلى المؤمن أمره كله ولم يفوض إليه أن يكون ذليلا، أما تسمع الله يقول عز وجل: ﴿ولله العزة ولرسوله وللمؤمنين﴾ فالمؤمن يكون عزيزا ولا يكون ذليلا، ثم قال: إن المؤمن أعز من الجبل، إن الجبل يستقل منه بالمعاول، والمؤمن لا يستقل من دينه بشئ.

hadith 240

Masaedat ibn Sadaqih narrated that Imam Sadiq (a.s) was asked if it was incumbent upon the entire nation to enjoin the right and forbid the wrong. He replied in the negative. They asked him the reason. He said

“It is incumbent upon those who are in power whom the people obey and can distinguish between the right and the wrong. It is not incumbent upon the weak people who do not know how to approach this issue, and might say wrong things about what is right. That is why God says: “Let there arise out of you a band of people inviting to all that is good, enjoining the right, and forbidding what is wrong. [The Holy Quran: Al-i-Imran 3:104]. But this is especial, and not general. As God the Almighty said: “Of the people of Moses there is a chapter who guide and do justice in the light of truth.” [The Holy Quran: Araf 7:159]. He has not said it is for all the people of Moses or all his tribe to enjoin the right and forbid the wrong, even though there were many groups there. And by people it is meant more than one, as God the Almighty said: “Abraham was indeed a model, devoutly obedient to God.” [The Holy Quran: Nahl 16:120]. In this verse it is said that he was obedient to God. Therefore it is not incumbent upon anyone who does not have any power, helpers or followers at peace time.”

وعن مسعدة بن صدقة عن أبي عبد الله (عليه السلام) قال

سئل عن الأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر، أواجب هو على هذه الأمة جميعا؟ قال: لا، فقيل: ولم؟ قال: إنما هو على القوي المطاع، العالم بالمعروف من المنكر، لا على الضعفة الذين لا يهتدون سبيلا إلى أي من أي، يقول من الحق أم إلى الباطل، والدليل على ذلك كتاب الله، قول الله عز وجل: ﴿ولتكن منكم أمة يدعون إلى الخير ويأمرون بالمعروف وينهون عن المنكر﴾ فهذا خاص غير عام، كما قال الله تعالى: ﴿ومن قوم موسى أمة يهدون بالحق وبه يعدلون﴾ ولم يقل على أمة موسى ولا على كل قومه ويومئذ أمم مختلفة، والأمة واحد فصاعدا كما قال الله عز وجل: ﴿إن إبراهيم كان أمة قانتا لله﴾ يقول مطيعا لله، وليس على من يعلم ذلك في الهدنة من حرج إذا كان لا قوة له ولا عدد ولا طاعة.
