Muʿjam al-Aḥādīth al-Muʿtabara

555 narrations 187 chapters

Compiled by Muḥammad Āṣif Muḥsinī (1935–2019), the Afghan jurist and scholar, and published in the 2000s. The project is stated in the title: to gather only those narrations he judged reliable, working through the standard collections and setting aside what his criteria excluded. That inverts the usual arrangement, in which a collection gathers broadly and leaves assessment to the reader — here the assessment comes first, and the grounds for it are given. Useful for one particular question: which reports on a subject survive a strict standard of transmission. Best read beside the older collections, since what it excludes is as much a claim as what it keeps.

Mu’jam al-Ahadith al-Mutabara (A Comprehensive Collection of Reliable Narrations)

Mu‘jam al-Ahādīth al-M‘tabara is an encyclopedic work of eight volumes by the contemporary scholar Āyatullāh Muhammad Āsif Muhsinī, in 1434 AH/2012 AD. The book is a valuable compilation of reliable and authentic narrations. It is an answer to those who accuse the Shī‘ah of having weak narrations in their books.

Al-Muhsini had always wanted to collect the narrations that are Mu‘tabar (reliable) in their chains of narrators. He felt this would assist the jurist in his derivation process, the researcher in conducting studies, the popular lecturer in preparing speeches, and even ordinary layman who were interested in knowledge.

The first attempt at completing the book took Al-Muhsinī four years and the result was a six-volume work which contained 11,658 narrations considered reliable. But before the book could be published Al-Muhsinī had to make significant changes to about 2000 narrations which fell outside the boundary of being reliable. In his second attempt, he was able to solve the issues.

Al-Muhsinī did not include a hadith with a weak chain except very rarely. He put in a disclaimer about its weakness if he did include it. The main aim was to include the narrations reliable by their chains, those that are termed sahīh, hasan, muwathaq and qawī.
